What Causes Severe Numbness In The Lips?

default
Posted on Sat, 15 Jul 2017
Question: My lips have been numb for a week. For the first couple of days it was both of my lips, now it's just the center of my lip and the area beneath the nose. Went to the dr and they have me allergy pills but it still hasn't completely healed. I'm terrified it's herpes, but when she examined I had no sores/blisters. What else can it be?

Brief Answer:
Possible causes listed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HealthcareMagic.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Numb lips causes include allergies (to foods, cosmetics, etc), electrolytes deficiency, low blood sugar, oral herpesvirus, degenerative neurological disorders, etc.

In your case herpesvirus seems to be unlikely since there are no cold sores.

Neurological degenerative disorders also seem to be unlikely, since there are no other neurological symptoms and you are getting better.

However, getting examined further by your Doctor and by the thorough investigation is necessary to achieve a correct diagnosis.

Hope you found the answer helpful. Let me know if I could assist you further.

Take care.

Thank you, Dr. One more question, if it was oral herpes, would blisters have appeared by now? I just feel extremely paranoid about that, but I'm scheduling a doctors appointment within the next week if the numbness/tingling doesn't go away.

Brief Answer:
Follow up question.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Some blisters or cold sores should have appeared by now, so I don't think it's herpes.

However, get checked by your Doctor about the correct diagnosis.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards.
