Posted on Fri, 11 Jul 2014
Question: Ok so I had arthroscopic knee surgery about a month ago and it hurts more than ever it pops continuously and tends to give way plus the stitches busted out three days after surgery and its still oozing blood and fluid. Did the Dr mess up or is this just part of having a meniscus tear and I'm healing?

Brief Answer:
Get culture sensitivity of fluid done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query.

From your history, I want to advise you, that you should have more concern regarding the oozing blood and fluid, as this is not normal part of healing of meniscal tear. Get culture sensitivity of that fluid done and send me the report. So that your further course of treatment by antibiotics, if needed, can be started as early as possible.

Some times due to improper diet and due to decreased immunity etc body is unable to cope up with stress of operation so that stitches busted out and oozing occur from operative site.

So I will answer your specific query:

Did the doctor mess up?
- I will be better able to tell after getting your reports of culture and sensitivity.

Is this just part of having a meniscus tear
- It seems that you have developed complication post surgery. Your stitches are infected and it is possible that you developed some infection inside joint.

I'm healing
-No, you are not healing well.

I hope you have got your answer.

Thanks.

Dr.Singh.

I am sending you a picture of the swollen and oozing side the ooze is a clearish yellow like when I take the bandaid off to clean it the bandage is always bloody and a clearlike yellow I go to see the Dr on Monday afternoon. As you can see from the pic a month later and still bleeding and oozing fluid I don't know if you could tell but there is a red ring around the wound I've felt it for heat but it doesn't feel any hotter than the rest of my leg which all in its self feels a bit warm no red lines however I am keeping my eye out for the more obvious signs of infection let me know what you think....

Brief Answer:
Superficial infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the response.

My friend from picture you send it seems to be a superficial infection . If it is not warm and you have no fever, then deeper tissues are not involved. But to confirm infection I still need report of culture and sensitivity of discharge.

You will need to see the doctor. Antibiotic therapy is necessary.
