Question: Hi Posting this on behalf of a friend. His wife had her third c section birth an year back. Till now she got about 4 periods (in 4 months, no period for first 6-8 months after birth). Every time she gets period she gets severe pain in the stomach around the stiches with white discharge along with blood. Is this some thing serious? does she needs to visit doctor or will it go away as time passes? Any preferred medicine to take or food to avoid or food to take?

Brief Answer:
Nothing serious.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
After the third C-section it seems that there is some fibrosis around the scar line due to healing. This causes cramping and pain during the periods. This can be reduced with the help of over the counter anti spasmodics and pain killers and doing a hot fomentation in the area during those days.
The white discharge during the periods is a normal finding. In case there is any foul smell associated with it then an infection needs to be ruled out after a vaginal swab culture under the guidance of a gynecologist.
Changes in the food habits is not likely to help her much. It is better to take an easy to digest soft food and avoid constipation.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thanks XXXXXXX for quick response. Much appreciated. Can she take pain killers during period. Came to know doctor during her delivery instructions asked her to avoid pain killers during period. Not sure if that is right advice. Any suggestion on this would be great.

Brief Answer:
Can cause slightly prolonged bleeding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Pain killers can increase the bleeding in case the person has some bleeding tendencies. She can take antispasmodics and do a hot fomentation. Pain killers like mefenamic acid are considered comparatively safer.
Hope my answer is helpful.
