What Causes Severe Pain In Back And Right-sided Abdomen?

default
Posted on Wed, 20 Apr 2016
Question: I have had a really bad pain in my back on the right side midway down every morning for about 2 weeks. I suspected kidney stones, so my Dr has ordered an ultra sound, but not until next Friday. This morning it woke me up again, but has started hurting in the front on the right side midway down. The pain, until today has gone away during the day, but the front pain isn't going away today. Should I just ignore it until Monday and call my Dr. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Hello & thank you for submitting
your question to HCM.

It would be reasonable to observe this pain for a few more hours. If it does not subside or if it worsens/increases in intensity, or if you develop any new pain or new symptoms, it should be evaluated by a physician. If it is being caused by kidney stones, they may be passing through, in which case aggressive hydration might be helpful.

If your pain is more persistent and progressive then it will be reasonable to be evaluated in your local emergency department. They can perform imaging testing and possibly start you on medication to alleviate your pain and also to help facilitate the movement of the kidney stone through your urinary tract if this is in fact the case of kidney stones.

I am concerned that the nature of your symptoms seems to be changing. If the symptoms do not improve or resolve over the course of the rest of the day over the next few hours and I think it would be reasonable for you to seek an valuation at your local hospital.

Thank you again for sending your question.

Sincerely,

Dr Galamaga
