What Causes Severe Pain In Lower Left Abdomen?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Aug 2015
Question: I have pretty intense local pain in my lower left abdomen, right at the bottom of my belly, but above my groin area. This is accompanied by achy, fluey symptoms. No fever yet. I am never constipated and my bowels have moved twice today. The pain feels similar to a severe gas pain.

Brief Answer:
Diverticulitis can be the case.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Pain in this location very often appears in case of diverticulitis. Diverticles are a kind of pouches in the large intestine. If a piece of stool stuck in this pouch caused an inflammation.
At your age (over 50), any signs of abdominal pain and gas problems should be checked with possible colon cancer. This is less probable, but should be ruled out.

As diverticulitis can lead to intestine perforation, I suggest you to do not wait with it. Please consult your doctor and have abdominal ultrasound and blood work done. If this will be confirmed, antibiotic treatment is necessary.

You should also get scheduled for colonoscopy.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
