Posted on Thu, 29 Sep 2016
Question: I have some pretty severe pain on the inside of my right knee. I Went to a specialist last week who said after X-rays that I have several bone spurs in my knees and hips but am not ready for a replacement. He gave me a cortisone shot on the opposite side where the pain was and told me to,resume my normal activities, the next morning, halfway into my morning hike my anterior knee pain was back, I asked him for an MRI to see if I have an ACL sprain or tear or possibly meniscus tear and he refused. My pain is constant now and I am unable to walk you 4-5 miles daily. Any ideas or thoughts

Brief Answer:
As mention beelow

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear XXXX
Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Your are likely to having osteoarthritis of hip and knee joint as it is common in your age.
In osteoarthritis, breakdown of cartilage and underlying bone occur due to degenerative process. It cause joint pain, stiffness and decreased movement of joint.
As your pain is severe, surgery is the best treatment.

You can try conservative medication under the observation of your treating doctor:
Mild exercise, prevent stress on joint,
Medication like diclofenac or naproxen (lot of side effect on long term use).
Injection of steroid: give relief for short term.
Glucosamine tablet and local application of analgesic gel.

If conservative medication will not helpful and pain interfere with the normal life and activity, then joint replacement surgery is the treatment. (replacement surgery is effective and result are good).
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if you have further query

Best regards
Dr. Sagar
