What Causes Severe Pain In Torso While Yawning Or Breathing?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 May 2015
Question: Hi. I have been having pain on my left torso. When I yawn or breathe in deeply, its a sharp pain. Also, midway down my ribs is sore to touch. When my physician did an x-ray, he said I was constipated, but I looked up symptoms and didn't really have the symptoms other than not having a bowel movement in 3-4 days, which is not normal for me. I used to go at least once a day. This has been going on for about 3 months now. I was also diagnosed with a 9 centimeter kidney stone in my right kidney and had lithotripsy done on Aril 4,2015. I also am still having pain from that.

Brief Answer:
Could be Kidney Stone .

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

Well even I feel its not due to constipation. The possible causes are :

1. Infections/Inflammation in the lung : Though a normal X ray will rule out infection but if X ray is done in the early stages of infection then it may not show it and falsely show it as normal.

Inflammation of lung / Lung covering called Pleura is a good possibility. This inflammation is more common in smokers , patients of Autoimmune disease.

2. Kidney Stones : Stone in the left kidney can cause the pain . Since you had stone in the right side , the likelyhood of you having stone in left kidney is high.

3. Pancreatitis : This is a condition where the Pancreas ( situated on the left upper abdominal quadrant ) gets inflamed causing the pain mainly in the abdominal region but sometimes it can cause pain in the ribcage.

4. Thoracic Radiculopathy : This is a condition where the nerve giving pain sensation to the ribcage gets compressed between the back bones causing pain.

I would recommend you the following tests for the evaluation of above conditions. Kindly get these tests done and revert back to me .

CT Chest and Abdomen, Serum Lipase and Urine Routine . If these reports come normal then you need to get MRI Thoracic Spine.

Hope this information was useful to you.

Any clarification feel free to ask .

Regards.
