Question: I am a 67 year old woman. Aug. of last year my muscles in upper thighs started to ache very much. Family dr. put me prednisone. Did no good. Checked thyroid and put on med. Did no good. My Throat is now tight and feels constricted. Have all the symptons of hypothyodism, including unexplained weight gain, constipation, dry skin, etc. Thyroid checked again, and taking med. it was normal Saw a rheumatologist. He did no blood work. Both family and rheum. said they had idea what this was and didn't know where to send me. Meds. I also take: Lisinopril 25 mg., alprazolam 5 mg, tramadol 25 mg, methocrabam 750 mg, 3 fish oil, baby asprin, centruim silver, and a couple of herbs. Please help. Don't know where to turn. Should I see endocronlogist? If not thyroid, what could this be? XXXXXXX Hargrave YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
Thyroid

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to note how you feel.

I see your thyroid was checked a couple times. Just make sure the TSH is close 1 to 2, if you are on medication for thyroid.
If not, a TSH of between 0.4 to 4.2 is acceptable.

When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your 3 month glucose average)
Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
25 hydroxy Vitamin D

You would be best served by seeing an endocrinologist in-person
