Question: I have been experiencing pain top of left leg, when really bad pain shoots down whole leg. GP says muscle affects knees as well when bad

I read your question and i understnad your concern. Your GP is right. Muscles pain can involve knee joint as well. To me it looks like age related articular degeneration causing this musculoskeletal pain. I would like you to get a fes radiographs, an MRI and bone absorprion scans as osteoporosis might be a case too.
Pain killers, exercise and balanced diet with vtamin d and calcium supplements will help. Dont lift heavy weights and avoid bad postures. loae weight if overweight.
