Question : Hi I am a 72 year old female, active, 5 ft 145 lbs, Thyroid problems and high blood pressure - both controlled with meds. Problem: I have a lot of pain throughout the body for several months and now I have significant pain whether I lie down or walk or sit. Seems like everything hurts. I also live in Central PA -- Lyme disease? Recently tested for B12 -tested at 1980. Tested for osteo arthritis and Rheumatoid -- Tested Neg. What can I do NOW to help with the pain and what is the cause? Tylenol and Advil have minimal effect.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
I suggest to meet your family doctor because you need to do some tests.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear
I have gone through your question.
I can understand your frustrations of dealing with these issues.

The causes of your pain can be systemic mucle pain or rheumatologic pain.

Systemic muscle pain — pain throughout your whole body — is more often the result of an infection, an illness or a side effect of a medication.

Common causes of systemic muscle pain include:
-Chronic fatigue syndrome
-Dermatomyositis
-Lyme disease
-Dystonia
-Fibromyalgia
-Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
-Influenza (flu)
-Lupus
-Medications, especially the cholesterol medications known as statins

Lyme disease can be a probable diagnose that cause your pain problem. If you don't have the characteristic Lyme disease rash,Lab tests are used to identify antibodies to the bacteria and can help confirm the diagnosis.(i Suggest to do these tests and to see if Lyme disease is the culpit of your pain.

If this will be your diagnose, don't worry.
Lyme disease is treated with antibiotics. In general, recovery will be quicker and more complete the sooner treatment begins.

Second option:I was thinking about Fibromialgia as a probable diagnose in your case.
The main fibromyalgia signs and symptoms include deep muscle pain, painful tender points, and morning stiffness.(Let me know more details about your symptoms.I want to know if you have tender joints and morning sicknes. These symptoms are important for the diagnose.

Another diagnose that i was suspecting for you is Degenerative disc disease in the lumbar spine. But you have pain throughout all your body,(not only in your lower back area) so this diagnose is escludes in your case.

All i can say (as endocrinologist)is that the thyroid problem is not the cause of your pain because you have normal thyroid tests(like you mention in your medical history.)

My advice is to consult your doctor because all the diagnoses of the list should be taken in consideration and there are necessary some test to find the right diagnose, and to have the right treatement.

Tynelol and Advil are good over-the-counter pain killers and generaly give relief.

Other measures that may provide relief from muscle pain include:
-gently stretching the muscles
-avoiding high-impact activities until after the muscle pain goes away
-avoiding weight-lifting sessions until the muscle pain is resolved
-giving yourself time to rest
-doing stress-relieving activities and exercises such as yoga and meditation to relieve tension
-Have a good worm bath.

Hope my information is helpful.
If you have other questions, feel freea nd ask.
Take care and good luck

Thank you for the detailed info. I appreciate it. I also tested positive on a test called antiistreptosylin o. And My B12 and folate tested high. My Rhuemetology tested negative.
For about 8 months my hair has been falling out. Does any of the above provide any other info to help narrow down my issues?

Brief Answer:
You need to do more tests to reach the right diagnose.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear
Welcome back.

The anti-streptosylin O or The ASO test is primarily used to help determine whether a recent strep infection with group A Streptococcus is the cause of rheumatic fever in a person with signs and symptoms.
This test and the Rheumatology factor test are used to check for rheumatologic diseases.

In your case, these test are important to exclude rheumatologic diseases that can be culprit of your pain.

High levels of vitamin B12 may be caused by some liver conditions, while high levels of folate may be caused by pernicious anaemia (this occurs when the body does not make sufficient supplies of a protein known as intrinsic factor).
In my opinion these conditions are not the cause of your pain.

The history of hair loss can be due to hypothyroidism(but we are speaking for a 8 months earlier. Hope you have solved this problem but I don't think it is related to you pain.

My advice is to meet your family doctor and to continue with other test that are important for the differential diagnose.

Don't worry. I'm sure that you will have your diagnose very soon and you will find relief.
