What Causes Severe Pain Under Right Breast?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Nov 2015
Question: Hello,
I've been experiencing increasing pain from just beneath my right breast, all the way down my side to where, I don't know, an ovary might be, and it hurts nearly every time I inhale. Of course worse when I cough or sneeze. It's mostly in the front but it feels like it carries over into that side of my back. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Brief Answer:
Do you cough?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this pain. To be of help, I will like to know for how long you have had this pain and whether you have a cough at this time or not.

From the location of this pain, it could be the gall bladder. This will typically provoke and make the pain worse a few hours after eating. I will like to know if you have ever made this observation. This will help me the make a precise identification of the pain and propose a treatment plan.

I await your responses and promise to get back to you as soon as they get here.

Yes, actually I do cough, but I don't eat much. My appitite hasn't been very good for some time. Not sure where my gall bladder is, but if it's just under my ribcage near the bottom, you might be right. Would that pain extend into my back as well, like tranfer pain, and that far down the front of my right side? What can I do to alliviate it if that is the issue?
Oh, and several weeks now, if not a couple of months, but it gets worse lately.

Brief Answer:
I will suggest you get an ultrasound!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for these details.

The gall bladder is situated just below the rib cage on the right. This can also cause referred pain to the back. I will recommend that you get an ultrasound as this is a good place to start at for investigation and management. This will be a great way to go.

I hope this helps. For now, pain medications such as Tylenol and scopolamine can be used to relief pains while the exact cause and treatment is established. A visit to your GP will set the ball rolling!

Let me know what your immediate thoughts are at this time.
