What Causes Severe Right Flank Pain At Night After A Kidney Stone Surgery?

Question: Hi I have been having pain in my right flank at night when I lay on my right side. It is so painful to turn onto my back which is the only way the pain stops! Usually happens after drinking red wine and while I'm either ovulating or menstruating! I have had liver, kidney and pancreas scanned and blood tests which came back as normal! I have had a kidney stone removed from my left kidney 10 years ago. I recently took part in dry January and started drinking again at the weekend. . I have been having this pain now for about 5 years on and off but it's happening more often now? Hope you can advise. Regards XXXX

Brief Answer:
maybe musculoskeletal pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

As the pain relieves on changing posture and scans, etc are normal, it is likely to be musculoskeletal pain. I can't connect it with red wine however.

Another possibility is pain of ovulation and Menstruation but that is usually not related to posture.

These are all benign and no specific treatment is required. Physiotherapy and local analgesic gels can help.

Hope this helps.
Regards

It does seem strange that I don't get the pain when I haven't drank alcahol? when i moved last night on to my back i felt pain across my whole stomach for a few minutes before it dissappeared. i now feel an ache in my right flank.
when I'm ovulating and menstruating I have fluid retention which made me think was that why I was more likely to have the pain then. (kidneys) I do have the pain when not ovulating and mentruating just noticed it more likely to have it then? I did have an accident damaging my ribs on the right side about 6 years ago?

Brief Answer:
gastritis also should be excluded

Detailed Answer:
This is another condition where alcohol can aggravate. An upper GI endoscopy can be considered. Otherwise, most serious problems have been excluded.
