What Causes Sharp Pain And Purple Vein In Palm Area?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Aug 2015
Question: After I ate lunch, I sat down at my desk and felt sharp pain on the inside of my palm, specifically on the "pad" below my left index finger. I noticed the vein in that area was purple and was swollen. The spot was about the size of a dime. Around the purple area was redness approx 1/4 inch around it. After about 15 minutes, the purple color mostly disappeared and swelling went down becoming less painful. What might cause this? I'm concerned that it might be a blood clot or could it just be some sort of irritation?

Brief Answer:
Possible RP and PVD.?Needs Confirmation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,

I understand your concern.

Yes certainly this could indicate a vascular disorder, more aptly called peripheral vascular disorder/PVD.

This can present with colour changes and pain.

This is called Raynaud's phenomenon/RP.

I advise you to get a Colour Duplex scan of the blood vessels in the involved upper limb.

This can detect any organised blood clots or blood vessel pathology.

Further management is based on the test results.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.

Hello Dr,

Thanks for reviewing my situation and providing the information. I've attached two photos that show what the area looked like after the swelling went away. These were taken at least a few hours after it happened. You'll see a purple colored triangle below the area described - underneath my index finger. It is still a little tender with some slight pain when I press on it today. I wanted to provide the followup and photos after this happening. What causes the purple color and slight pain a day later?

Brief Answer:
Changes are part of the process.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,

This is how the changes proceed in Raynaud's Phenomenon.

Initial blockade of blood vessel will cause whitening or swelling.

Later this will cause cyanotic changes leading to purple colour.

These changes are accompanied by pain.

Thank you.
