Question : i am taking a nasal spray and antihistamine for what my doctor thinks is a eustachian tube problem. a few hours ago i started having sharp pains coming down my jaw near my ear. could this be an infection? i see her tomorrow morning, but i'm concerned about the pain

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The sharp pains are more likely to be referred pains due to changes in pressure in the middle ears, given your history of Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD).

2. Infection is less likely without additional symptoms. The direct ear examination is important to rule out any infection.

3. Is this problem in both ears or one? If it is one sided, investigations as to why one side is affected are recommended.

4. At present continue your painkiller (after meals) till your consultation tomorrow. Try steam inhalation (nose and mouth) and you may use OTC nasal decongestion drops (such as 0.1% or 0.05% Xylometazoline) temporarily for a day.
