What Causes Sharp Pain In Right Ear When Blowing Nose Or Swallowing?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Feb 2015
Question: I started having sharp pain in my right ear when blowing my nose or swallowing.Took decongestants seemed to get better. Am no longer having pain when swallowing or blowing nose, but On Saturday.I started having pain under ear and along jawline. My ear doesn't hurt inside, only just outside it along my jawline and underneath and is very tender to the touch. I do grind my teeth so I'm not sure if it could be related to that. But I still wonder since it started with pain in my ear.. Low grade temp. Have been on 500mg amox once day since Sunday.

Hello!
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

From your symptoms it doesn't seem to be an bacterial ear infection that would require antibiotics because in this case you would have earache with diminished hearing ,discharge from the ear ,pain when you pull the ear, fullness of the ear and these symptoms would persist.
Your initial symptoms of sharp ear pain when blowing your nose, with low grade fever might be due to an inflammation of the ear due to an viral infection,or due to nose congestion.Usually this is self-limiting condition and symptoms improve in few days.
Your symptoms of pain in the jawline might come from your temporomandibular joint.Teeth grinding is a common cause for such pain.
It can cause muscle pain around the jaw, pain when you open your mouth and pain when you press at the TMJ joint.
You should eat soft foods for some days, avoid chewing gum.
You can do put some warm compresses at that area several time during the day.Massage gently the muscles around the joint.
-Take an painkiller like Ibuprofen every 4-6 hours.
If the pain doesn't seem to get better you should consult a physician.
Primarily he will examine your ears with an otoscope and after excluding ear problems ,he can give you a stronger medication to control the pain.
Your physician can refer you to a specialist for long term management of temporomandibular joint disorder.

If the antibiotic was prescribed from your doctor ,you should finish the cure (although the dose it to low ) otherwise you should stop taking it.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.I will be happy to assist you further.
