Question : I have sudden sharp pains in the hip area when I bend over. Is this due to arthritis?
Brief Answer:
Hip Osteoarthritis
Detailed Answer:
Hi there
Thanks for the query
Yes, most probably it is due to arthritis of the hip.
You can get an X-ray to confirm.
Avoid bending forwards or lifting weights. Avoid squatting, cross leg sitting, climbing stairs and kneeling.
Apply hot packs to the affected region. Take painkiller Tablet Acetaminophen 500mg thrice a day after food for 10 days.
You can use a walking stick in the opposite hand while walking if you have any difficulty moving around.
I hope I have answered your query.
I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

The reason I was concerned was that two years ago I had similar sharp pains in my lower back area. I was told it was arthritis. After 11 months a ct scan showed I had an insufficiency fracture on both sides of the sacrum. This had not shown up on xrays. I am now taking calcium with every meal and fossamax once a week. I was hoping that would strengthen my bones to keep this from happening again.
Also the sharp pains do not happen every time I bend, I think it's when I twist and bend, so yes, avoid twisting and bending.
So my question is, will all the calcium and Fossamax get me so this kind of thing will stop or do I just expect to continue to deteriorate.

Brief Answer:
Bone scan essential
Detailed Answer:
This is the best time to get a BMD or DEXA bone scan to look if your bone density has improved since you have started the medication.
Also Technitium 99 bone scan cam look for occult fractures like the insufficiency fractures that may be adding to the pain.
