What Causes Sharp Pain In The Upper Back?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Nov 2016
Question: I have an extremely severe sharp pain in the upper part on the center of my back that started a week ago. It is very hard to breath as the pain increases with each breath. It's gotten so bad that the pain shoots with the slightest movement. I cannot take a deep breath because of this. Any ideas, thank you.

Brief Answer:
It appears to be musculoskeletal pain and pain killers and rest will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

From your description your pain appears to be of musculoskeletal nature. You have not mentioned if you have any other symptoms like fever, cough etc. Any history of trauma?

You should get a chest xray as well as xray of the spine of affected area. In the meanwhile you may take a pain killer and apply local anlgesic ointment which will give you some relief. You may even take local heat treatment like short wave diathermy. Avoid doing vigorous exercise at the moment and let the part rest. Further course of treatment will depend on the x ray reports.

Take care.
