What Causes Sharp Pains In The Middle Of Menstrual Cycle?

default
Posted on Thu, 25 Sep 2014
Question: Hello!
I'm wondering if I might have ovarian cysts - each month a few days before my periods begin and midway through my cycle I'll have a sharp, intense pain in my left ovary, that usually lasts a few days and requires ibuprofen to go away for a few hours. Sometimes the pain will be really intense one night, and then I'll have spot-bleeding and it'll start to go away the next morning. Could this pain be from cysts?
Thank you for your help!

Brief Answer:
Not likely to be cysts.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The pain that you have at the middle of the cycle or just before the periods can be due to ovulation or endometriosis or PMS. This is not likely to be related to ovarian cysts.
However it is best to get an ultrasound scan of the lower abdomen done to find out any pathology that you may have.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
