Brief Answer:
Muscle sprain likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The mild pain in the front and top of the shoulder is likely to be due to a muscle sprain due to the recent exercise that he is doing. The pain will subside with rest and avoiding all overhead activities.
He can also do a hot compress and apply a local analgesic gel for relief. In case the pain is persistent then oral muscle relaxants will help.
I hope this answers your query.
