Question : Should I find a new surgeon? I'm scheduled for arthroscopic surgery in one week for a right hip labral tear, FAI (both cam and pincer), with debridement and reshaping. (? the femoral head is more 'egg' shaped and it sits way deeper than the left side- 34% deeper). I've been in pain for almost 3 yrs so will be happy to get relief, but am having doubts about doing it with this particular surgeon. He is the younger associate of the original surgeon that gave me the dx, and we tried 3 rounds of hip injections, therapy, etc. He is being very conservative and does not want to do replacement which is all he does now ( also have some oa, but not enough for full replacement) so partner doing it who only does the arthos. Problem is I have had to call for a refill of pain med (norco) the 1st Dr gave but Dr 2 refused, gave me Tylenol 3. ( I have major allergies and am allergic to all NSAIDs, Sulfa, Compazine among a couple other things so it is very limiting to what I can take.) After a week it was doing nothing and I was almost in tears, called back nurse said to take 2 six times a day! That seemed excessive to me and when I asked about it she said it was fine and hung up. I can't take that much it would make me a zombie and I still have kids to take care of, so I took plain Tylenol except at bed and dealt with it. Yesterday my husband made me call again as I actually was in tears this time and this time the nurse called back and said the Dr. (my surgeon) said he would do Tramadol and this would be it until my surgery. I took 2 as directed and have been clawing my skin off ever since and almost looked sunburned last night. I am afraid to even call this office back because I feel like I am just going to get screamed at, and I really don't know if they have even looked at my allergies! I can deal with the pain for a week- I have dealt with it for this long, but my gut is telling me that maybe I should just cancel the whole thing and find someone who seems like they actually have read my chart!? Am I over reacting? I'm otherwise in good health and 46 yr old. Oh, and I also broke my toe on the opposite foot 4 days ago and afraid to even mention that, but is it something they need to know? Thank you in advance!!

Brief Answer:
Tramadol allergy was unexpected.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Tramadol is not NSAID or Sulfa. The allergy that you had was unexpected. It is very unlikely that the doctor has not red your charts or allergy properly.
It is best to inform your doctor regarding the allergy that you had and the fracture. They might need to delay the surgery by a few days and let the symptoms subside completely before going for a surgery.
In case the surgeon now is dealing with only the hip replacements then it is recommended to look for a more experienced surgeon for femoral head reshaping. More experienced is the surgeon, better are the surgical results.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
