What Causes Skipped Heart Beats?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Oct 2015
Question: I'm experiencing skipping beats in my heart about 5-10 per minute. My heart rate appears normal besides the missing beats. It's beating approximately 70 bpm. I'm not having any other problems. No sweating, chest pain, or trouble breathing. Should I go to the ER or wait for a doctor's appt? It should be noted that I recently started taking a Creatine supplement 5 or 6 days ago. My only caffeine intake is 100 mg per day that comes from green tea extract.

Brief Answer:
I recommend stop taking caffeine and the supplements

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM #

Regarding your concern, your symptoms may be related to the caffeine and creatinine supplements that you are taking.

As far as you don't have any other symptoms, there is no need to go to the ER.

I recommend avoiding caffeine and creatinine supplements intake.

If your symptoms persist, I recommend consulting with your GP for a careful physical examination, a resting ECG and some blood lab tests ( complete blood count, thyroid hormone levels, blood electrolytes, fasting glucose, etc.).

An ambulatory 24-48hour ECG monitoring may be needed to rule in\out any possible cardiac arrhythmias.

Hope to have been helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions whenever you need!

Anything in particular I should watch for while waiting to see GP?

I also take the following supplements:
Fish oil
Turmeric
Vit D
Niacin

Should I stop taking any of these or just the creatine?

Brief Answer:
No restrictions of the other supplements are necessary.

Detailed Answer:

Hi again!

Besides from avoiding caffeine and creatine, no other restrictions are necessary.

Meanwhile, I recommend you being alert about your heart rate and palpitations feeling as well as your blood pressure.

If palpitations become a disturbing complain (very frequent ectopic beats associated with additional complains like dizziness, dyspnea, weakness, etc) you need to immediately consult the ER service and anticipate the above mentioned medical tests.

If otherwise, you feel fine and palpitations are not bothering you, just follow the scheduled strategy I mentioned above.

So, no restrictions of the other supplements are necessary.

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
