What Causes Slight Bradycardia In A Patient With GERD?

default

Question: Hi, I'm 27, male, 155lbs and occasionally walk for 30 minutes or so. I have a heart related question and to provide some background info, I have had several ekgs, an echo, 48 hr Holter and stress test in july. I have an irbbb, mild leaky valves (trivial regurgitation) and saw some arrythmias on the holter. Nothing that was any concern for my cardiologist nor requested a follow up. I may have gerd and seem to have a bit of stomach pains on and off.

With that being said, I have had panic attacks after eating and before when I haven't had much to eat. what throws me into and panic is before, during, or after I notice my heart rate drops for instance tonight, to 44 bpm briefly ( about 10 minutes or more after eating with my feet up on the couch) and bounces shortly after up to 54-64bpm. Typically when I'm resting in a chair or laying down my heart rate is between 52-58 if I'm not nervous or conciousness of it. Once I get up it is in the 70-80 range when I'm actively moving.

I don't feel dizzy other I'm aware of or like I'm going to faint when this occurs, it just simply scares me. I do notice I feel off or that my stomach may feel uncomfortable or a slight pulling down sensation on the sides of my neck, if that makes any sense. I believe I have been hunched over when these instances have occurred as well, likely putting pressure on my stomach.

this doesn't happen all the time but I don't know if what I'm experiencing is normal or a cause for concern. It always only looks like I'm having a panic attack despite me seeing my heart rate first then becoming concerned.

I do just want to say, once I'm startled attacked my heart rate jumps up, everything feels fine and it's almost like nothing happened. With exercise my heartrate increases fast and easily just attackers when I'm home, my heart goes into its rest rate right after relaxing.

Should I be worried given all of this or can it be expected for a relatively fit 27 yr old?

Thanks,

XXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

You shouldn't be worried about what you are experiencing. As long as cardiac examinations were normal on July and you doesn't experience fatigue or faint you shouldn't worry about slightly bradycardia.

Your findings are to be expected in a healthy adults with GERD due to enhanced vagus nerve function which is responsible for bradycardia. Please keep in mind that asymptomatic bradycardia is harmless and you shouldn't worry to much about it. This will aggravate your anxiety and may provoke a panic attack.

Hope this will be of help!
Wish you health
