Question : my 6 yr old child was detected with vsd(4mm) when he was 4 months old ,but after consequent echo test at 1 year ,2nd year revealed that the vsd was shrinking and finally disappeared at 3 years, recently my child had cold and a stuffy nose and since he was not allowing to touch we ignored it ,until there was slight bleeding from the nose,I managed it by putting ice and pressure and than cleaning the nose with saline and little oil.I just wanted to know whether this could be because of the old vsd or something more serious?it happened twice after a gap of 2 days but I know that the nose was stuffed on both the occasions.please help

                                    Brief Answer:
Slight nasal bleeds are common in young children after colds.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. For a six year old child, a slight bleeding would be common with a cold as the nose grows. There is also the possibility of adenoid hypertrophy causing the stuffy nose.
2. Get a prescription for cold medication and a Skull X-ray (lateral view) to check for the adenoids.
3. It seems unlikely that a small VSD would cause pulmonary hypertension (Eisenmenger's Syndrome). Hence a repeat cardiac evaluation (though not urgent) will help rule out this remote possibility.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
Regards.

                                    are adenoids something serious?

                                    Brief Answer:
No. This is a very common problem. Responds to treatment.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. Every child has adenoids, which enlarge between 3 and 7 years of age.
2. This usually responds to medical treatment. A few children require surgery (Adenoidectomy).
3. Get a lateral SKull X-ray done to check if the adenoids are the cause of the nasal stuffiness and hence frequent colds and the nose bleeds.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
Regards.
