Question: I'm suffering from cold and cough for the past 3 days and since yesterday my stomach(slightly towards the right hand side ribs) pains while I cough. How do i find out that this is any serious issue or just a muscle pain? Please help me out.

Brief Answer:
Not to worry. Let me help you out.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX.
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
Thank you for posting your query.
I can understand your concern.

You see, slight pain in the upper abdomen while coughing is normal.
There are muscles between ribs called intercostal muscles that are accessory muscles while breathing as well as coughing. Their spasm can cause pain behind the ribs.

However there are possibilities of a chest consolidation( infection) , pleural effusion ( fluid collection in pleural space) .

I would suggest you to -

- Not to worry.
- Get a chest Xray P.A view done
- I would start tablet levofloxacin and stripe grillinctus. Your doctor can guide on exact dosage.
- Visit a clinician . He/she can examine you and correlate clinically.
- Apply mylaxin D ointment locally over the ribs where pain is felt.

If the pain subsidies with ointment application and after the cough goes away, must be muscle spasm.
However a chest Xray and a proper examination by a clinician can tell you best about the exact cause.

Hope this helps.

When I cough, the sputum spitted out is not coloured or white in colour. In that case can I rule out the case of chest consolidation( infection)?
i'll take an XRay and check for fluid collection in pleural space. Will update this space with the result.

Thank you,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Not to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Actually consolidation is a stage of pneumonia where the lung loses elasticity and becomes solid. In early stages of pneumonia and atypical pneumonia , the cough may not be productive.

I would suggest you to do the chest XRay .

Kindly update us with the results.
