What Causes Slightly Elevated Bilirubin Levels?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Jul 2015
Question: I am a 29 yo female. Upon routine testing for an annual physical, my total bilirubin was 1.3. All other tests were normal, except for slightly elevated total cholesterol. At the time of the test, I just began my cycle and had fasted 14 hours. I stopped taking the progestin only pill in February, and just stopped nursing 6 weeks ago. I was told to wait 1 month for additional testing (hepatic function) but insisted on going earlier (tomorrow will make 1 week). Was this a chance elevation?

Brief Answer:
Following answer to your query.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

You are reporting to have bilirubin level 1.3 slightly elevated. Normal range of bilirubin is up to 1.2.

First of all i can say that there is no clinical significance at your bilirubin level. It is not called high level in clinical practice.

Otherwise I suggest doing hepatic function tests like:
-ALT, AST, GGT and ALP
-abdominal ultrasound

If all exams will result normal than don't worry it may be related with XXXXXXX syndrome, a benign condition not associated with liver damage.

Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!

Thank you so much! AST and ALT were both well within normal limits. My doc wanted to wait 1 month for hepatic function test, but my anxiety levels went up with finding this out. On my insistance I go for LFT this morning. Is it pissible it will be down?
