Posted on Wed, 10 Jun 2015
Question: Hi doctor,

Gud Morning.
Name: XXXXXXX Age- 39, Female. Had acidity in the past. Have PCOs. No other significant Past Medical History.
I developed a small rounded painful lump on the cheek inbetween the two jaws on cheek, a couple of inches away from ear -Left side,a couple of days ago. The lump feels soft rounded and movable. The lump arose suddenly overnight and it is not seen outside only feels to touch. It is not visible or palpable from inside the mouth either. I can feel a mild temperature over the cheek as well. I am on meds for pain, pain has subsided, so has the hardness. Would like to know what it could possibly be. I have no problem swallowing, munching or salivating. All I could remember is i was working in severe heat in the kitchen for three days and was sweating very profusely.

Brief Answer:
Kindly consult a doctor for antibiotics and a USG scan

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam,
Thanks for writing in to us at hcm.
This is Dr.Riyanka and I am glad to be helping you with your query.

I have understood your symptoms in details and it suggests inflammation of parotid gland (parotid gland is positioned near the jaw in front of the ear).
Also as there is local rise of temperature , it indicates an infection. It could be due to blockage of the duct of the parotid gland.
Kindly consult a physician immediately as he/she would advice some tests like:
Ultrasonography , MRI or CT scan to know the nature of the swelling whether it is benign or secondary to any malignant condition.

You may be advised to increase the duration of antibiotics that you are taking i.e, (Sporidex) to bring down the infection along with the analgesics that you are already taking.

Also kindly take supportive treatments like:
1.Drinking lots of water and also lemon juice to stimulate more saliva secretion to clear the infection out through the salivary ducts.

2.Massaging the glands and applying warm compresses.

As of now it is important to consult a physician in order to get the infection under control .

Hope this answers your query. Don't worry .
