Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: I am 25 year old XXXXXXX male. My question is : when I feel my testis they sometimes feel softer and smaller in size (especially at night) and other times it is more firm and bigger. Is this normal? Also , many of my friends say that mere touching their testis hurt, but for me it hurts only after I put pressure- is this normal?

Brief Answer:
Things seem normal. No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details provided by you. The testes (plural of testis) are present within the scrotum which has a muscular coating. When these muscles contract, they thicken and the scrotum seems more corrugated. If you feel a testis in this situation, you are basically feeling the thickness of these muscles along with the size of the testis. In that case it might seem more than when you feel it with the scrotal muscles relaxed. Moreover, the longitudinal dimeter of a testis is more than the sideways diameter and so it might feel different depending on how you hold it. There are loose ducts called epididymis at behind each testis and their compactness may seem to vary, thus giving you an impression of difference in size. One testis may be slightly bigger than the other and it is normal too. Overall, I do not think that there is any reason to get concerned.

Touching a testis is not supposed to be painful; pressing against it is likely to be painful. It is normal. You need not worry.

Hope that helps.

Thanks doctor for the answer. But I would like to mention that regarding my question on testes feeling soft or hard , I have made that observation even when the scrotum sac is thin and loose. Hence can you please tell me if that seems to be not normal.

Brief Answer:
It seems quite unlikely. Get it verified by a doctor. Finding not normal.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to write back earlier.

I do not expect any difference in size or consistency of the testes normally. Such a thing is not normal or expected and I would insist that you visit a doctor and see if his findings match with yours.

Hope that helps.
