Question: I am a 40 year old woman in great health. I woke up this morning with a purplish, reddish, brown spot in the middle of my eyelid. It suddenly appeared overnight. ( I have olive skin tone) It's about the size of two pencil erasers. What could cause this so suddenly. No pain, no itching.

Brief Answer:
It seems like a spot of blood clot of eyelid.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam
Welcome to health care magic.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

It seems from the history that you are having a small purple reddish brown spot in the centre of the eyelid without pain, itching.... and other symptoms.
This appears like a spot of ecchymosis or blood clot because of bleeding or hemorrhage into the skin of the eyelids. This can occur because of rubbing of eyelids or minor injury to the eyes during sleeping.
A systemic evaluation to rule out common diseases which will make the blood vessels in our body fragile like hypertension, diabetes... has to be done.
The treatment is generally not required as it resolves by itself over 1-2 weeks. Applying cold compression helps in early resolution.
If possible do send a photo of the involved eye so that I can confirm the diagnosis for you.
Hope the information is helpful to you.

Thank you. This is very helpful. I have uploaded a photo of the eye. It's a bit less red than it appears in the photo and bit darker ( brown/purple). Thank you so much for your help.

Brief Answer:
It is congested blood vessel of eyelid.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.
I saw the photo attached with the question.
This is a small red lesion caused by dilatation of the blood vessel. This can occur following mild injury, rubbing of eyes or sometimes following insect bite.
Since there is no pain, itching no need to worry.
Applying cold compression will help in resolution.
If you develop pain or itching you need to use antiinflammatory drugs or anti allergic drugs. Otherwise no need to worry, this will resolve.

Hope the information is helpful to you.
