What Causes Sore Throat After Using New Asthma Inhaler?

default
Posted on Tue, 31 Mar 2015
Question: I was just prescribed an inhaler for asthma caused by allergies. To ease wheezing. I used for the first time a few hours ago and now have a very sore throat. It feels as if I have swollen glands which hurt a lot, midway down my neck. Had from about 3 hours from using inhaler, 7 hours ago. Before, my throat was fine. Is this simply a side effect? If so, then I probably won't use again, as it's more uncomfortable than wheezing. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
It is due to poor inhaler technique.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
Inhaler treatment is the standard first line treatment for asthma.
You are facing side effect of poor inhaler technique.
If you are not taking inhaler properly, drug particles stick to the throat (back of pharynx) and it can cause pharyngitis which cause sore throat.
So it is not drug's side effect. It is faulty technique related side effect.
I advice you to read instruction manual thoroughly for the proper technique of Inhaler use.
You need to wash your mouth thoroughly to remove drug particles on the pharynx.
In my opinion, inhaler with spacer device is best for you.
So ask your doctor about Spacer device.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
