What Causes Sore Throat And Tongue Discoloration With Thick Blood-tinged Sputum?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jan 2016
Question: Hi, For about 4-5 days I've had a sore throat, and also some black and yellow coating on tongue. I don't have a cough or temp. What's concerning is I've coughed up balls of blood, initially some extremely sticky, glue-like phlegm (sorry to be so graphic). This evening I coughed up a hard piece of something about the size of a pea that was in my throat. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
This requires further evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. A Videolaryngoscopy (VL'Scopy) should be done since you coughed up a foreign body. Ideally, that piece should have been sent for examination. Get a sputum examination done for 3 consecutive days.

2. The sore throat, black and yellow discolouration of the tongue, occasional blood clots and thick phlegm (sometimes a post nasal drip or reflux related) may seem alarming but are common and usually benign.

3. Your cough may be due to the Lisinopril (ACE inhibitor). Review and change your blood pressure medication.

4. The most common causes would be inflammation, dryness (mouth breathing), tobacco stains and so on. Most require no treatment. If the above investigation are normal, routine medication, medicated gargles will settle this condition.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
