Question : I returned from Costa Rica 2 weeks ago. My boyfriend and I (we're are in our 70's) became ill there. We were already run down before we got there. Symptoms were very sore throat, swollen glands in neck, mild fever, cough, diarrhea, rash on back, chest, arms, neck and extreme fatigue. We saw no mosquitos so we probably were not bitten. I've had mono in my early 20's and fibromyalgia since. Wondering if this may be a reoccurance of Epstien Barr. I am still feeling under the weather. Any comments?

The symptoms you describe can, unfortunately, be experienced in a wide range of acute infectious illnesses. It will require a physical examination and adjunct laboratory tests to definitively diagnose. Epstein Barr virus can have various presentations and may possibly be a consideration. An adenovirus is also another consideration. I recommend that you see your physician at your soonest convenience for a complete examination. In the mean time, please stay well-hydrated and avoid contact with others to prevent spread of infection.
