What Causes Sore Throat, White Coating On Enlarged Tongue And Mouth Blisters?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Dec 2014
Question: I am worried about HIV. I gave (unprotected) oral sex to a guy 21 days ago. He did not ejaculate, but there was pre-ejaculate. At 16 days, I had a 4th generation test AND an RNA test done through stdcheck.com. Both came back negative. I'm still worried though. I have had a sore throat every since the oral sex, along with enlarged tonsils, a white coating on my tongue. And over the last few days, my tongue has been burning. I believe I may be developing mouth sores or blisters. Can I believe the negative test results?

Brief Answer:
The above tests are reasonable

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Your worry is taking you down than the actual problem that you are thinking of. The both tests are reasonable enough to detect HIV particles in the blood during early days. You can repeat ELISA for HIV 1 & 2 after 30 days and 90 days after exposure. That is more sensitive test at that period.

Regarding the symptoms mentioned they are not specific to HIV. We can attribute them to any common throat infection. However you had risky encounter and if the other person was HIV positive there is a high chance of transmission.

I see depression and anxiety in your medical history. These are conditions which occur in bouts.

Two things infront of you:

1) Ask the guy if he is tested positive. If yes you should get prophylaxis. If not you can just leave it.
2) Meet the local doctor for examination of throat and sent the swab from the throat for culture. If you develop sore and blisters then you have a serious chance of other STD's like Herpes.
So STD screening apart from HIV is way forward.

3) A counseling session with a Psychologist will have a large impact on your overall health.

Hope this answers.
