What Causes Soreness And Swelling In The Throat?

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Dec 2016
Question: Hi,
A few weeks ago I got sick...soar throats fatigue and aches...my son had something similar so I figured I would get over it like he did. I snowballed into a respiratory infection, ear infection and pink eye. The doctor put me on Steroids and amoxicillin. I finished both drugs and still had a tenderness in my throat. I stuck my finger in the back of my throats and felt a bump on my epiglottis. I freaked out and went on WebMD...which scared me even more. I started salt water gargles and stopped drinking any alcohol. I do not smoke and have never smoked. Could i have cut my epiglottis while swallowing? I am trying to get into an ENT. I do not drink everyday and when I do it is 2 glasses of wine at most. The bump is near the top and it feels smooth behind it...I can only do this once before gagging. I also have had a lot of acid reflux and stopped drinking coffee and pop and am drinking only water and tea. Any ideas or suggestions?

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Firstly of all relax!! don't get too worked up!! I am sure it will be a small issue. Considering the fact that you don't smoke and drink only occasionally, there is nothing to worry!!

The swelling you are feeling may either be a cyst on the epiglottis or lingual tonsil hypertrophy both of which can explained by your acid reflux. It is unlikely to be due to any trauma while swallowing.

You do need to get yourself examined by an ENT specialist, but you don't have to get all tensed up for That!!

For the time being just gargle with warm salt water two to three times a day and avoid spicy food and please don't keep putting your finger in your throat for feeling the swelling!!

You will be fine, do let me know if you've any further queries

Take care
