Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: I have been experiencing soreness almost like a bruised feeling under both of my breasts. Will have soreness than runs along my ribs. This came on suddenly while I was out of town 2 years ago. Had tests that include ultrasound , upper GI, abdominal ultrasound and a chemical test. The pain will radiate to my back at times. Lately wake up sweating. To date nothing has been found.

Brief Answer:
More likelihood of being due to costchondritis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully through the condition explained by you. Although you need to be examined clinically, I have some probabilities in mind.

1. Costochondritis
The ends of the ribs joining to the sternum (chest bone) are made of cartilage. The cartilagenous ends of the lower ribs lie below your ribs. These could have been inflamed. Inflammation can give rise to the soreness or pain that your are describing. It is not likely to show up in any investigation. It could be that when you coughed too hard due to the cold, your lower ribs got strained and the condition resulted. Treatment is simple and consists of:
* Treatment with analgesics like aspirin or naproxen (to be taken in full stomach).
* Non-medicinal measures can be tried for relief of pain in costochondritis. Examples of such techniques include: Hot compress and Ice application, Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), Gentle stretching exercises, Avoidance of sports or activities that worsen the pain.

2. If there is skin soreness along, there is more likelihood of a fungal infection. But it is not relevant if no skin changes are present.

3. You need to be evaluated to rule out pancreatitis.

Hope that clarifies your queries.
