Brief Answer:
BPPV- benign paroxysmal positional vertigo

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

This sounds like BPPV, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Vertigo (the sensation of either a person or room spinning) has different possible causes and BPPV is one of them.
It is the most common cause of vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) refers to vertigo that occurs with certain positions or movements such as laying down as in your case.
It tends to last a few seconds or minutes.
It is related to the inner ear.

It can sometimes respond without treatment though this can take weeks to months.

Treatment involves : (a) medication, the medication does not treat the cause but may improve symptoms eg cinnarizine, cyclizine, promethazine, dramamine, valium, meclizine

(B) epley or semont maneuver
This helps to re position particles in the inner ear and both are very effective. Comprised of different movements

Can be done in your doctor's office who would then reassess you after to see if there is any improvement.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Are any of the drugs mentioned "over the counter?" Instead of Valium, would Xanax do the same result?

Brief Answer:
dramamine, meclizine

Detailed Answer:
HI

Yes some are over the counter eg dramamine or meclizine.
Xanax may also help but as mentioned though the meds may help decrease the symptoms somewhat they would not address the problem itself

The maneuvers mentioned would be the best options, if you wish, the medication can be combined with this

Please feel free to ask anything else
