Question : Morning,
A few days ago I began feeling rigidnees in my right hand. Now followed by sharp pain to my right temple. Last month my right side of the back with extreme muscle pain.
Basically its been my right side that has been affecting me. Should I see a neurologist? What would he be looking for? Some say it could be carpal tunnel….?

Any ideas?

Thank you

Hi XXXX
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar, a neurologist, here to answer your query.

If you would have presented to me as an outpatient, I would have asked you these questions, in order to answer your query well:
1)Is rigidness in hand accompanied with tremor?
2)Is rigidness accompanied with sharp pain or tingling sensation?
3)Is rigidness more at night or day?
4)Does rigidness increase while doing some specific tasks?
5)Do you have any complaints in any of the other three limbs?
6)Is the right temple pain occuring at the same time as righthand rigidness, or at some other time?
7)What is the duration for which temple pain persists?
8)Is the temple pain associated with any visual abnormality or nausea?Does it increase on exposure to light or sound? Is it associated with redness of eye or excessive lacrimation?
9)Back pain on right side-is it still persisting? Was it in upper or lower back?Did it radiate to any of the limbs?
10)Any history of injury or trauma?
11)Any past medical history?-like diabetes or any other disease?

Please follow up with these details,so that I can answer your query better.

Brief Answer:
Its not carpal tunnel syndrome. Please get a cervical X-ray done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks foe being in follow-up.

Thanks for a quick follow up.I have gone through all the details provided by you and after analysing the clinical history,I would say that one thing is sure that - It is not a 'Carpal tunnel syndrome'(CTS).This is because CTS is characterised by nocturnal pain and paresthesias in hands which increase in severity on tasks, which involve hand exercise.
Upper back pain and hand rigidness may be related and I would like to get a 'cervical spine digital X-ray' done to rule out any spondylitic changes in the cervical spine.

Temple pain appears to be unrelated and is simply a stress or episodic'Tension type headache'.
Please get started on low dose 'amitriptyline'.Along with 'methylcobalamin' should be started.PLEASE TAKE MEDICINES UNDER A PHYSICIAN'S GUIDANCE.
Please follow-up in the same thread after getting the X-ray done.
Hope I have answered your query for now.If you wish to,you can close the thread-rate it and write a review.
