What Causes Stiffness Of Bones?

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Jul 2014
Question: Dear Doctor,

I have stiffness of bones right from my childhood. My paternal grandmother too have it. Due to this stiffness, the joints are noisy and make a breaking noise when we try to stretch them.
I am not able to sit down with folding legs like Padmasana or normal Sukhasana too.
Moreover, bending exercises cant be done and the flexibility in overall body is very less.
For this problem, my local Orthopedic doctor has suggested stretching exercises which I regularly perform, but there's not much progress.
Also, I tried Yoga, but can't perform those asanas as they are suggested again due to this stiffness problem.
I tried Amway Glucosamine for couple of months, there was a minimal relief but not a permanent solution.
I dont have any pain in joints, nor in any part of body for now.
What do you suggest for this?

Detailed Answer:
Hi Kausal,

Thanks for your query.

There are many causes of stiff joints. The primary cause of stiff joints is arthritis, which is inflammation of the joints.

You don't need to worry if there is no associated joint pain; but you have to do some conditioning exercises to improve the overall integrity of the joint - stronger muscle will take the weight of the joint and help to reduce the pressure on articulating surfaces, thus preventing any damage to the joint.

I suggest you to get xray of joints done to see any arthritic changes. Continue doing stretching and strenthening exercises. Take diet rich in calcium and vitamins.

Hope this helps you . Let me know if you have any more concern.
