What Causes Stinging Sensation And Numbness Near The Waist?

default
Posted on Sat, 13 Aug 2016
Question: Hi. Never tried this, but here goes. Yesterday, while paying for a drink, I felt what I assumed to be a hot, bee-like sting about belt high. Honestly, thought it was a bee-sting from something that had gotten into my jeans. However, no bee. I brushed it off as possible a pin that had somehow stuck through my XXXXXXX pant pocket. Nothing there as well. Same sensation this morning...bee-like sting in exactly the same place. Also a localized numbness. Only thing there is a small, scratch-like mark. The recurring sensation and the numbness has never happened before. Bizarre. What gives? Thanks, XXXXXXX (male, 59 years old and not crazy).

Nice to meet you Mr. "Not Crazy"---- I believe you----LOL

Detailed Answer:
Good afternoon.

A small scratch like mark right at the same spot you felt 2 sharp stinging sensations certainly sounds most likely to be some type of insect bite. It doesn't sound as if you were in the woods or any place that could be infested by ticks. Nor does it sound as if the sting/bite were from something as dramatic a Black Widow or Recluse spider because in either of those cases you've likely be very ill if not in the hospital.

The possibilities abound of what was hiding out in your pants and what exactly would be the best way to handle such a situation. I don't know if you live or are in what is considered an endemic area for Tic borne diseases which could be anything from Lyme Disease to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. If nothing in particular has progressed from yesterday then, for the immediate here and now I do agree with your move of keeping the area clean and dry as well as putting some antibacterial ointment on it.

If you have not had a tetanus shot in over 10 years I might recommend that protection as well. You would not need any other type of vaccine or other injection and simply keeping the area dry and clean for the next few days will resolve the scratch mark in my opinion without further incident.

However, I would also, just to be on the safe side get either to your doctor or to an ER and get tested for acute Lyme Titers. I might even insist to be seen either by a Lyme Specialist if your medical center has such a person or at the very least an INFECTIOUS DISEASE specialist who will know the best prophylactic medication to use these days if there were any legitimate reason to be worried about such a thing.

If I've satisfactorily addressed your question then, could you do me the kindest of favors by CLOSING THIS QUERY and be sure to include some fine words of feedback and a 5 STAR rating to our transaction if you feel the response has helped you? Again, many thanks for posing your question.
