What Causes Stomach Discomfort And Diarrhea?

default
Posted on Thu, 31 Jul 2014
Question: For a day and a half I have had intermittent stomach discomfort. Today with a diarrhea, noticed a long (about 18 inches) what looked like a string of mucus but felt more like a noodle protruding from my anus. It broke as I was pulling it out. Can you tell me what it might be?

Brief Answer:
Please provide the photo as following....

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I am sorry for the situation you are in!

Can you please send a photo of the long string of mucus you noted on your feces?

Feeling intermittent stomach discomfort, associated with today's diarrhea might be indicative for a possible stomach bug (gastroenteritis).

The long string of mucus coming out from your anus might be :
- fiber
- intestinal parasite

The photo of long string can help determine its nature better.

If the diarrhea will persist for more days, then, I advise to :
- consult with your doctor
- run examination of stool for ova/parasites
- do abdominal ultrasound

to determine what is causing your symptoms.

Meanwhile, I advise to:
- eat often and small portions
- keep good hygiene when preparing food
- drink plenty of water
- take papaverine or buscopan to ease the pain

Looking forward to have the requested photo in!

Hello and thank you for your answer. I flushed the stringy stuff in the toilet and do not have a picture. I am worried about having an intestinal parasite. How would this be diagnosed? And if it is diagnosed positively, how would it be treated?

Brief Answer:
Should examine the stool for ova/parasites in lab.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,

To my opinion, it might be fiber. However, to confirm if it is intestinal parasite, I advise to send your stool in the lab and get it examined for ova/parasites. The lab technicians there will identify the presence of parasites in the stool through microscopical examination and they will report the specific parasites seen.

Depending on the type of parasite seen, the right treatment will be selected.
It is important to keep a good hygiene especially when preparing foods and after using toilet utensils.

Hope it answered to your queries! Let me know if you have further follow up questions! Otherwise, you can close this discussion and kindly rate my answer!
Thank you!
