What Causes Stomach Pain Radiating To Rib Cage While Coughing And Sneezing?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Jun 2015
Question: I started experiencing pain in my stomach, just to the left of my navel when I would cough or sneeze, this pain has now moved over to just under my rib cage on my left side. It is quite agonizing pain when I both press on the bottom part of my rib cage, as well as any time I cough or sneeze. The pain is almost debilitating for several minutes after a cough or sneeze, it wasn't as bad when the pain was more to the center of my stomach/abdomen. This has been going on for a few days, but today it is MUCH MUCH worse.

Brief Answer:
Most probably muscular but since not getting better consider ER

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for posting your question to HCM,

I read carefully your description.

It actually may be many things, since the complexity of the structures in the location you are describing is a lot.
...Most possible cause is muscular, since you have it more when coughing, sneezing, or touching the rib. Have you tried taking any medicine. If drugs like paracetamol or Ibuprofen help, then its confirmed that it is muscular cause.
...Is cough a new symptom started with the pain? We need to rule out serious causes connected with lungs problems. If it is not connected with breathing, then its more likely not to be connected with lungs.
...How has your appetite been? Passing stools ok? If that is ok, then its not a GI problem.

Though, the fact that you are not getting better, bit worse, is a sign that should be taken seriously. So, my main advise is to consider going into the ER or your family doctor, and do check-ups to rule out what we talked above, and then if everything its normal, it will be muscular cause

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you need any more clarification. I would be happy to answer.

Take care.
Dr. Papaqako.
