What Causes Sudden Deterioration In The Muscle Strength?

Posted on Mon, 29 Sep 2014
Question: Over 2 1/2 months ago my lower rt leg was achy, then the next day, severe pain, burning, in the bone from below knee to foot 24/7, felt like the muscle was pulling away from the bone, could not put weight on the leg, muscle atrophy, cold, could not touch the lower leg at all, could not place even a sheet or anything that came in contact with the lower leg increased the burning, burning would not stop 24/7, foot drop, lost sensation in leg and lower abdomen, felt like I broke the tibia or had a stress fracture, which xray was negative, then entire leg atrophied, next moved throughout my entire body, face numb and cold, still is, weakness, in wheelchair & crutches, muscle atrophied in entire body and cold, muscle spams in chest, went to ER & in hospital 5 days, had xray, mri, scans, blood work, have seen 7 specialists so far, do not know the root of the problem or diagnosis as of yet. They haven't seen these MRIs I had done recently.
Received today MRI: Cervical- vertebral body hemangioma at C7, multilevel degenerative disc disease, All areas C3-4 C5-6 C5-6 broad disc/osteophyte complex effaces the ventral thecal sac, abutting the ventral cord & resulting in mild canal stenosis with mild left neural foraminal stenosis, uncovertebral and facet degenerative changes. multilevel cervical spondylosis in varying degrees of canal and foraminal stenosis.
MRI thoracic spine: multilevel thoracic spondylosis resulting in mild canal stenosis of the upper and mid thoracic spine, broad based disc buldges.
MRI lumbar: L1, L2-3, L3-4, L4-5, L5-@1, mild and minimal buldges, superimposed left subarticular through foraminal disc protrusion and annular tear.
Drs. said likely 2/2 peroneal vs scietic neuropathy, or CRPS, or MS, not sure yet, all tests are not back in yet.
Could a viral infection cause these symptoms, or more likely from back.
Also, I would like to know what MRI'S mean in laymen terms and treatment.
My muscles in my legs look like jello, they were toned and had ok muscle strength I walked every day, now I am house bound, if I put weight on my legs I have severe pain and cannot walk at all, bed ridden throughout the day, needless to say this has been a nightmare and not getting better.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The sudden deterioration in the muscle strength is not likely to be only due to the degenerative changes in the spine. The generalized changes in the body and the muscle weakness Is more likely to be due to a neuropathy or a viral infection causing such symptoms.
The MRI report is suggestive of age related degenerative changes causing the compression and bulging of the discs at multiple levels more in the cervical vertebrae that causes a compression of the nerves coming out from various spaces or foramina in between the vertebrae. This nerve compression cause pain and weakness.
The treatment mainly depends on the cause. It can be an immune related disorder also. You need to consult a neurologist and an immunologist for proper treatment.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you. I also experienced electrical shocks in the right leg and also overall jolt of shock that would make my body jump, this lasts off and on for a few days then it stopped. The MRI states cervical spondylosis and varying degrees of canal and foraminal stenosis & abutting ventral cord, would this cause symptoms of burning and weakness, migraines, severe eye pain, and muscle atrophy as well? I also have pain in my lower abdomen and swelling and it may not be related. I see a neurologist tomorrow and my family dr today and she is puzzled with what to do next. I will have her refer me to immunologist.

I appreciate your time and response. I am just desperate to find out what is wrong.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The electric shocks are due to nerve stimulation. Cervical spondylosis causing the nerve compression can cause all these symptoms but the nerve compression has to be severe to cause a muscle atrophy. Migraines and eye pain are not related to spondylosis.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Thank you, I did see my primary doctor today and referred to neurologist tomorrow, I just had a quick question since my rheumatologist stated it could be MS and will need to get a work up, and could west nile virus cause these symptoms? Thank you very much for your expert opinion.

Brief Answer:
Less likely to be west nile virus.

Detailed Answer:
It is rare for West nile virus to cause all such symptoms and there is no improvement of muscle weakness with time. MS is also a likely cause.
A detailed work up is needed to find the cause.
Regards.

Thank you very much. I did see a neurologist today and he felt my problem is from my neck/cervical and the nerve conduction test was fine so he felt it is not nerve related or MS or peripheral, but neck effecting the central nervous system and the cervical issue controls everything from the neck down, he recommended a epidural, I feel I also have a viral infection, my entire body is very weak and can barely walk, feels like I am being pulled or weighted down...I don't know where to go next, I do appreciate your thoroughness and giving me advise as to other causes. I did read where someone with a rare west nile disease had polio like symptoms and attacked her leg first and then muscles and weakness and she couldn't walk.

Brief Answer:
Viral infection can be there.

Detailed Answer:
The possibility of having a viral infection is present as you are having generalized symptoms also. Let your neurologist investigate you properly and run the blood tests to find out any other deficiency. Epidural will help in symptomatic relief.
You can ask your neurologist XXXXXXX rule out the possibility of a viral infection on your next visit.
