What Causes Sudden Elevation In Blood Sugar Levels?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: I am a type 2 diabetic, well controlled. I woke up this morning extremely dizzy. Checked my blood sugar, it was 292! I've never been that high. I've experienced some major stress in my life the last few days. Could that be the cause? I'm kinda freaking out here. How concerned shold I be?
How long does a reply normally take?

Brief Answer:
Stress

Detailed Answer:
Glucoses persistently above 250 are a matter of concern especially with symptoms signaling trouble such as shortness of great, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dizziness.
A reading of 292 with the problems you are experiencing is of concern. Ideally you should call your diabetes care provider and see what (s)he would like you to do.
When I see someone like this in my practice I have them check frequently and use fast acting insulin in specified doses that I give them as a year-round 'rescue' instruction sheet. This insulin is different from Lantus.
Further it is important to determine the cause of the elevation. Stress can be a contributor. Often it is infection too. Appropriate evaluation to look for this is necessary especially if your high glucoses persist along with the symptoms.
