Question : What could sometimes cause a sudden pain at the back or in the chest when breathing or taking a deep breath ?

Rib nerve pain.

Such pain is caused by rib nerve irritation. It is called costochondritis. Usually the reason of this issue remains unknown. Inflammation or spine issues can be the reason.
Please try to start some physical activity to relax and strenghten chest muscles.
In case of pain Ibuprohen should help.
