What Causes Sudden Sharp Pain In The Chest?

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Sep 2017
Question: Hi Doc,
I had a CT of the arteries of my heart and thank God everything was except for the small hernia they found in my stomach. Reason for the test is my dad had a heart attack at my age 44 and he still is doing well. The reason for contacting you today is I couldn't sleep last night which happens but woke up in the AM with chest pains , maybe 4 out of pain but when I got about of bed it's going away. Could this be muscular ? I don't want to rush again to the ER again. Thats why I did the test in the first place. Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your symptoms are not typical of any cardiac disorder (including coronary artery disease).

Besides, your recent performed coronary angio CT scan has resulted normal and this is another argument to exclude possible coronary artery disease.

Gastritis or gastro-esophageal reflux can lead to such pains, which are improved by standing up position.

A musculo-skeletal pain can not be excluded either, considering the fact that the pain was modulated by body position.

Coming to this point, there is no reason to go to the ER!

Nothing serious is going on! I can reassure you about that.

I would recommend just trying an anti-acid or PPI (omprazole, pantoprazole, etc.). This would help relieve the pain in case of gastritis or gastro-esophageal reflux.

If the pain persists, I would recommend taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen. They can help relieve musculo-skeletal pain.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
