What Causes Sudden Swelling In The Mouth?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Sep 2015
Question: The dentists office is currently closed but I'm worried. After dinner this evening I felt some swelling in my mouth. Looked in the mirror and there is like a swollen purple vein on the right side of my mouth. I've no idea if it's dangerous or how to deal with it until morning when I can see a dentist. Brief Answer:
hematoma, self limiting, warm and cold water gargling, consult oralphysician

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query and picture.

As far as the swelling in the mouth is concerned, it look more likely a hematoma in the retromolar area and the cheek secondary to the trauma caused by the teeth (cheek biting). You need not be panicked. It is a self limiting condition and will resolve in 5 days time. Do alternative warm and cold water gargling 3-4 times for 2-3 minutes until you see the doctor tomorrow.

Please ask your doctor to check for sharp teeth. If they are present, it might be the cause of trauma and it has to be made smooth by enameloplasty. Do not traumatize that area by biting over that swelling.

I hope i have answered your query. If any queries are there, reply me back.

Take care.
