What Causes Swallowing Difficulty And Earache When Previously Diagnosed With Ear Infection?

Question: Hey Dr,

For the past three days I have woken up with a blocked ear that feels full. After I have a shower I am able to unblock it but there is still pain there especially when I swallow or eat. Should I go see a doctor about this? I have quite a few had ear infections last year but I haven't had one for about 7 or 8 months. Also what else can I do to stop the pain somewhat I have just been having 2x pandols so 1000mg in total which seem to help for a while. How long are ear infections meant to last and can they heal on their own without antibiotics? I don't have any other symptons besides the ear pain.

Brief Answer:
excess wax depositions in ear canal or otitis media.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to health care magic,

I have read your query and understand the concern,

It might be because of excess wax depositions in ear canal or otitis media (middle ear infection) but it will require complete ear examination by otoscope.

Ear infection could be mostly due to bacterial infection (which are usually painful) or it can also be due to viral infection or due to allergy or sinus infection which also need to be ruled out.

The best way to treat painful ear infection is the use of oral antibiotics with oral pain killers for some days like 4 to 5 days.

Without use of antibiotics, it would be difficult to treat ear infection especially in case of bacterial ear infection.

So,in my advise you should see an ENT doctor who can examine you and can come to a certain conclusion to start the appropriate treatment.

Meanwhile, you may continue to take panadol 1000mg two times daily.

You can also take combination of pain killers (like paracetamol 500mg with diclofenac 100 mg) or

If there is fluid or pus collection inside ear then serratiopeptidse can be added with pain killers for symptomatic relief.

You can ask your doctor who will know about it.

Hope this will help you.

Thanks for the advice Dr, its definitely not excess wax since I have been too the ent the past and it has never been the issue I am thinking most likely a middle ear infection. Is it possible to wait a couple of days to see if it gets better or would it be advisable taking the antibiotics straight away?

Brief Answer:
Do not take antibiotic without doctor's advise.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I will not advise you to take antibiotics straight way but you should see a doctor and get examined your ear first before taking it.

Also you may wait for a couple of days if the pain is not so severe or troublesome but it is very unlikely that it may subside by its own.

A doctor will examine your ear canal by the use of otoscope and will tell you about the infection (if there) and further course of treatment.

Yeah I can't take it without a doctors prescription anyways but I meant if it was prescribed to me. I am looking at going either tomorrow or on Thursday at the latest and that way I will be able to see if it gets better as well. In terms of pandol and nureofen which would provide better relief in this situation? Bear in mind I do have gerd problems at times so Nureofen could upset my stomach without food. Also what could be a possible cause of me getting an ear infection what are common ways people get them so I can prevent getting them in the future?

Brief Answer:
Repeated cold is the commenst reason.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Yes,you may wait for a couple of days and see if it gets better or not.

Meanwhile you can take panadol (paracetamol) for pain relief which is much better option than nureofen (ibuprofen) especially if you have GERD problem.

The commonest causes of repeated infection is cold and other reasons like throat infection or repeated sinus infection.

You can use cotton ear plugs while going outside and thus should avoid further exposure of ear canal to external environment which will be helpful.

If possible, better to cover mouth up to ear with the help of handkerchief or mask while riding two wheeler to avoid dust exposure.

You should use wax remover drops if there is excess wax depositions in the ear canal because excess wax makes ear more susceptible to catch infection easily.

Do not use any pointed objects (like key or safety pin or even ear budds) to scrape ear inside the ear canal in the interest of cleaning, however doing so may induce infection.

Hope this helps and let me know if I can help you further.

Regards,

Dr.Sandip
