Question : I have been having trouble swallowing my food and even water for about a month now. I also get short of breath and feel a stabbing pain in my chest. Could this be caused by stress?

Hi! Welcome to health care magic!
Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through. Based on the history you have shared, such symptoms can't be ignored.

To start with EKG and chest X-ray at the earliest to look for any abnormality as to exclude cardiac or pulmonary cause of chest pain or discomfort and difficulty swallowing.

If that is normal then, Oesophagoduodenoscopy or endoscopy of upper gut with barium swallow is needed to look for any lesion or mass obstruction the flow of foods.

Also some basic blood work up may be needed including complete blood count to look for anemia. If these are unremarkable then, manometery to look for achalasia or narrowing at the base of the food pipe may also be suggestive.

Treatment will depend upon the cause and once that is established rest is manageable. Meanwhile keep using semisolid or liquid diets with small sips and avoid drugs like motility agents like Domperidone unless the exact cause isn't known.

Wishing you to have a quick recovery. Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
Regards.

I only seem to have trouble after a stressful day at work. I am a Corrections Officer and the compound I work on has had a lot of stabbings among inmates and assaults on staff and inmates by other inmates

Brief Answer:
Needs work up before attributing it all to the stress

Detailed Answer:
Hi!
Thanks for the detailed feedback.

Well though these symptoms can all be due to stress but, physical cause of these symptoms needs to be worked out and can't be ignored as shortness of breath with chest pain isn't something to be ignored and atleast EKG and chest X-ray needs to be done. Swallowing to both solids and liquids is also a significant symptom and if you experience any signs of weight loss or decrease in hemoglobin at routine blood works then endoscopy should not be delayed.

Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Regards.
