Question : My son is a 19 year old with Downs Syndrome. He has always had mucous issues with his upper airway. He was a NICU Grad for horrible meconium aspirate, and had asthma till about age 6. He sweats every time he eats . He now coughs and spits continuously when not interested in something. He does have the autism spectrum diagnosis. I realize he is a complicated issue and requires a MD exam. I was just wondering if there is a very mild form of Cystic fibrosis that Trisomy 21 kids might have ?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting in health care magic.

Cystic fibrosis can occur in any child and its frequency in our country is quite high. But we suspect Cystic fibrosis when there is recurrent pneumonia in a child.

Sweating while eating may be a sign of early Heart failure which is common in Down syndrome babies who have a variety of congenital heart diseases. If he is coughing a lots and showing no interest in feeding there may be some heart issues.

As the baby was having asthma, there may be a chance of asthma recurrence also. Thus he requires a check up.
