Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to bleeding into the tissues

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
Your symptoms are suggestive of a bleeding into the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the finger.
Since it occurred without any trauma, it is better to have it investigated. There are a number of conditions producing bleeding disorders. It is better to have yourself examined and investigated by a doctor.

Brief Answer:
Bleeding beneath skin causes swelling.

Detailed Answer:
It is better to keep ice for short periods of time and this would decrease the blood flow and reduce the tendency to bleed.
