What Causes Swelling And Hard Solid Bump Between The Ankle And Heel?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: Yes please tell me what I should do. I have swelling and a very solid bump between my ankle bone and my heal on the inside of my foot. Could this be a strain or tear to my flexor retinaculum? An x-ray didn't show any problem with my bones in that area. If it's a tear what do you suggest I do to help heal it? I'm already taking Aleve for inflammation and I'm walking with a crutch to keep weight off.

Brief Answer:
MRI scan and a surgical repair may be needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The hard solid bump between the ankle and heel can be a tear in the retinaculum. It needs a proper evaluation after an MRI scan to see the extent of the tear. The tear may need a surgical repair. Only keeping the weight off the foot and anti inflammatory medicines may not help.
It is best to consult an orthopedician for proper evaluation.
I hope this answers your query.

Is the flexor retinaculum a muscle or tendon or something else? If it's torn can it repair itself with blood stimating therapy or anything else?

Brief Answer:
Less likely to heal on its own.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Flexor retinaculum is a thickened fascia that holds all the flexor tendons. If something is bulging out from the torn fascia then it will not heal on its own. In such cases surgical repair is needed. Only minor sprains or partial thickness tears can heal on their own with rest.
Hope my answer is helpful.

This is a hereditary condition I'm finding out from my mother. What if the pain goes away and I choose not to do surgery? Even with surgery isn't there ther possibility of another tear or rupture?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Praveen Tayal (12 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
It can happen again.

Detailed Answer:
If it is a hereditary condition then another tear or rupture can also happen after the surgical repair. If the pain subsides then you can avoid the surgery. But you need to do an MRI scan for a proper diagnosis and to rule out any malignancy.
Regards.

What do you mean by a malignancy?

Brief Answer:
Can be a soft tissue growth.

Detailed Answer:
The lump that you have mentioned can be a soft tissue growth or a muscle tear also. If it is a soft tissue growth then a benign mass or cancerous mass needs to be differentiated. MRI scan will help in identifying the type of swelling it is.
Regards.
